What Are SAFE Buildings?
Do you know what to do in the event of a wildfire at the Lab? The Lab is 200 acres of steep vegetation which is subject to wildfire threat. Wildfires move quickly, and you will have little time to prepare.
Driving out in your personal vehicle may not be possible as cars will clog the Lab roadways and limit access for first responders. Walking away may be an option if you are able, and if it is safe to do so, which depends on the location of the fire and the speed of the fire.
The best option may be to relocate to a safe building. These buildings are temporary refuges and are built out of concrete or steel, and have defensible space around the exterior. It is important that you know the location of several safe buildings. Once inside a safe building, move to the interior, away from windows. It may be hot and smoky but it is safer than being outside as the wildfire passes.
Become familiar with how to reach several of the safe buildings so no matter where you are at the Lab, you can reach one quickly. Your safety is our top concern, and we want you to be prepared in the event of an emergency.
