An early morning grass fire Saturday burned about 500 square feet before being put out by the Alameda County Fire Department crew that is always on site at the Lab. The fire department crew was aided by the Lab’s Site Security team and the Site Operations Center. The grass fire was noticed by a sub-contractor before 5 a.m. who notified security at the Blackberry Gate.
The blaze was brought under control at 5:13 a.m. There is no apparent cause of the fire, but investigators report it was slow-moving, and the area had little vegetation thanks to the goats which had just cleared the area last week. The goats are part of the Lab’s plan to control vegetation and control the threat of fire. Watch to see how the goats are protecting the Lab.
