The U.S. Department of State’s list of state sponsors of terrorism (SST) countries (linked here) currently includes:
- Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
- Cuba
- Iran
- Syria
Invitations to prospective visitors, employees, affiliates, guests, contractors, or subcontractors who are citizens of, were born in, or are affiliated with (employed or sponsored by) any of the terrorist-sponsoring countries require advance notification and approval. Individuals from SST countries who are accessing the Lab for any length of time must be approved by the DOE Under Secretary for Science BEFORE they can be granted access to the Laboratory.
NOTE: DOE requirement does not include those from terrorist-sponsoring countries who have become U.S. citizens. The requirement does, however, include permanent residents or “green card” holders.
To initiate the DOE approval process, contact the Foreign Visits and Assignments (FVA) Office (486-6874) as early in the hiring or invitation process as possible. Since these approvals are currently taking 4-6 months or more, early notification is essential to best accommodate both the prospective employee, guest, or contractor as well as the sponsoring division.
