The new physical site security leadership team is in place and working on several initiatives to protect the Lab’s people, property, and information. More details on these initiatives will be available in the next few months.
David von Damm, chief, site security, joined the Lab in May, coming from the Oakland International Airport where he served as the Federal Security Director, overseeing 480 security officers, managers, and staff. Prior to his work with TSA, he served as the Deputy Federal Security Director in Alaska for the Department of Homeland Security.
Steven Nepowada is the new Physical Security Manager, overseeing security technology systems, including implementation of new security systems, and developing security standards for construction projects. He came from the financial industry where he oversaw physical and information security.
Blair Edwards joins the Lab as the Protective Force Manager from the Department of Homeland Security at Las Vegas International Airport, where he oversaw security officers and the canine screeners. He will be managing the Lab’s contract for security officers and U.C. Berkeley Police Department. He will also work with Emergency Management on Lab readiness drills.
Nathan Keller, who has been at the Lab since 2017, has been promoted to the first-ever Personnel Security Manager for the Lab. He will maintain the Foreign Visits and Assignment and Security Clearance programs, as well as managing the Badge Office. Nathan is an emergency medical technician and worked in emergency medicine before coming to the Lab.
The LBNL Site Security Office includes Physical Security, the Security Operations Center, the Site Access and Visitor Management program, Foreign Visitors and Assignments, and Personnel Security.
