Badging in at the gates is an integral part of safety and security at our Lab. However, the confluence of vehicles, cycles, and pedestrians can present safety hazards if we are not careful and paying close attention. In addition, our security officers may need to enter the roadway to move cones or other barricades. Please keep in mind the following safety precautions when approaching gates:
Entering the Lab:
- Approach slowly and come to a complete stop at the badge reader
- Do not proceed through the gate unless all of the following are true:
- The green light indicates that the badge scan was successful (for Employee lane).
- The gate arm has completely lifted
- The crosswalk is clear of pedestrians
- The security officers are cleared of the roadway
- If you forget your badge:
- Enter using the Blackberry Gate visitor lane
- If entering as a pedestrian, stop before entering the crosswalk to the visitor kiosk:
- Check for downhill and uphill traffic
- Ensure gate arms are down
- Proceed when waved on by a security officer
Exiting the Lab:
- Approach the gate slowly
- Check for pedestrians, cyclists, or security officers before proceeding
- Watch for oncoming traffic and proceed only when it is clear and safe to do so
Thank you for doing your part to ensure the safety of everyone at the Lab. If you have any safety concerns or questions regarding the gates, please contact the SES Division Safety Coordinator, Ayla Quesada at aquesada@lbl.gov or 510-529-1215 (cell).
